Worldbuilding Update: My Map, Language, and Progress

My digital art skills are rather rusty, and whilst they are not of the best quality, I wanted to share a sneak peek of the map I’ve been working on for my fantasy world! While I still need to finalise the names for cities, towns, and villages, this map represents a huge step forward in expanding the world of my story.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve dedicated most of my writing time to worldbuilding. I realised my world wasn’t quite big enough for the story I wanted to tell, so I’ve been expanding it in every way possible.

I’ve been working on:

  • Mapping the World: Creating a detailed map of most locations.
  • Naming Places: I’m in the process of naming cities, towns, and villages, carefully tweaking the letters to match the feel of the world.
  • Language Creation: I’ve developed over 150 words for the world’s primary language, which, I’m not going to lie about, has been tiresome but has had a satisfying result.
  • Family Histories: To bring depth to the story, I’ve started creating family trees that stretch back eight generations for all schools of magic rather than just the two main schools that are mentioned.

As for my story itself, I’m currently 36k words into the first draft. While the quotes I’ve shared so far on Instagram remain unchanged, I’ve paused on sharing new ones until I finalise some key aspects of the world.

Thank you for following along on this journey! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the map – do you enjoy seeing the behind-the-scenes process of worldbuilding? Let me know in the comments!
