Back to Drawing

Before I started drawing the creatures from my story, I needed to figure out if I could still draw at all. Relearning to draw was essential as drawing a fantasy world requires a unique set of skills and imagination.

It had been a long time since I picked up a pencil for anything more than a scribble. So I started small with a cheap sketchbook, some pencils and a book called How to Draw with Photorealism by Jasmina Susak. (That’s an affiliate link — it doesn’t cost you anything extra, but it helps support the site if you decide to buy the book.) Nothing fancy, just slow, careful steps in relearning to draw.

These are some of the drawings I did while working through the book. They weren’t meant to be shared at first because they were practice. But relearning to draw helped me rebuild some confidence and reminded me that I can create things with my hands again.

Right after finishing these, I drew the first creature from my story world. I’ll be sharing that next week, but I wanted to show these first — the part before the magic came back.

Thanks for being here. ✨
